Mid-20th Century. This mask was handmade in southern Malakula Island in the Republic of Vanuatu (formerly the New Hebrides) east of Australia. Made of compact treebark, vegetable fiber, and baked mud, painted with natural pigments of terracotta red, black, and white. Adorned with two inset sacred pig tusks.
Shrouded in mystery, the mask was part of a men's secret society ritual of which can only be discussed to men that have undertaken the ritual.
